Amazing performance from Buddy Guy at North Sea Jazz Festival - Damn Right I’ve Got The Blues!!!

Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Erykah Badu, Taj Mahal, Joe Bonamassa, Little Feat, Van Morrison, Buddy Guy, John Primer, Dr. John,  … are a few of the acts taking the stage at the 46th annual edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival this summer. The festival takes place June 29 through July 14 in various venues in Montreux, Switzerland. The ticketed performances are held at the Stravinski Auditorium and the Miles Davis Hall.

Meestal zijn het historische gebouwen of unieke natuurgebieden, maar het zou zomaar kunnen dat het geluidsarchief van het Montreux Jazz Festival OOK Unesco Werelderfgoed wordt. Dat betekent dat het in de toekomst ongemoeid blijft en extra goed bewaard blijft. Het archief bevat meer dan 5000 uur live opnames van meer dan 4000 artiesten.

The Band’s Levon Helm is said to be in the final stages of his “battle with cancer”.

The news about the 71 year old drummer and vocalist with the country rock group was revealed on http://www.levonhelm.com by his family. A message to fans reads:

“Dear Friends, Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.”

It continues: “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration… he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage… We appreciate all the love and support and concern. From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy.”

De allerlaatste kans om op de Belgische première van Leonard Cohens wereldtournee te zijn!

Uit duizenden steden wereldwijd kiest Leonard Cohen het prachtige Sint-Pieterplein om zijn wereldtournee te openen… en daar willen de Belgische fans duidelijk bij zijn. Want alle vier de concerten zijn nu reeds uitverkocht! Leonard Cohen in het Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam

Greenhouse Talent organiseert ook een optreden van Leonard Cohen in Nederland. Na de concertreeks in België trekt Leonard Cohen richting Amsterdam. Daar speelt hij op 21 augustus in het Olympisch Stadion. Met het podium een aantal meter voor de middenstip en een volledig zittende opstelling wordt in het Olympisch Stadion een comfortabele, intieme setting gecreëerd voor circa 13.000 muziekliefhebbers. Het stadion was al eerder gastheer voor historische concerten, zoals Pink Floyd, Supertramp en André Hazes. Wie niet genoeg krijgt van Leonard Cohen, kan hem dus ook nog eens in Nederland aan het werk zien in het decor van het monumentale Olympisch Stadion.

Lick Library’s Jam With Joe Bonamassa shows you how to get that unique mix of seventies hard rock and British pure electric blues rock with a double DVD set of guitar lessons. 

The track lessons are by Danny Gill, former Joe Satriani pupil and teacher at MI Hollywood. Jam With Joe Bonamassa (£27.99) breaks down the classic blues-rock of Bridge To Better Days and Joe’s interpretation of the Led Zeppelin track Tea For One. Danny than takes a look at the upbeat electric rave up that is Sloe Gin, the hard rocking Story Of A Quarryman and sparklingly vibrant guitar notes of The Ballard Of Joe Henry with its zepplinesque rhythm. The last two tracks are more recent covers of Bobby Parker’s Steal Your Heart Away with a solo to make you weep and Jeff Beck’s Spanish Boots, which Joe Bonamassa has transformed with his excellent arrangement skills.

Nieuwe namen Gent Jazz Festival 2012

Damien Rice, Tindersticks en Amatorski op Gent Jazz Festival

Het Gent Jazz Festival (5 tot 14 juli, Bijlokesite) voegt weer enkele schitterende artiesten toe aan de affiche: Damien Rice, Tindersticks, en Amatorski op 12 julien STUFF. op 14 juli.Daarmee is het programma voor 12 julivolledig ingevuld. Eerder maakte het festival reeds namen bekend als: Paco de Lucia, D’Angelo, Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A., Melody Gardot, Brad Mehldau, Antony and the Johnsons and Metrolopole Orchestra, Wayne Shorter Quartet…

Niemand minder dan Damien Rice doet op donderdag 12 juli Gent Jazz Festival aan. Rice brengt geen platen uit aan de lopende band, is zuinig met interviews en optreden deed hij de afgelopen jaren ook eerder sporadisch -zijn laatste passage in België dateert alweer van 2007- hij is nochtans een bezielde en gulle live muzikant. Deze zomer komt de innemende Ierse singer-songwriter solo naar Gent Jazz Festival.

Tindersticks hebben weinig introductie nodig. De groep bouwde in twintig jaar een sterke reputatie op, zowel live als met hun albums die stuk voor stuk laaiend enthousiast werden onthaald. De muziek van de Britse groep wordt gekenmerkt door muzikale gelaagdheid, de literaire teksten en de melancholische muzikale omlijsting. Met hun jongste plaat The Something Rain die in februari uitkwam, brachten Tindersticks een pareltje uit met de bezieling en frisheid van hun beginjaren. De concerten van de laatste maanden doen ons alvast watertanden om hen live aan het werk te zien op Gent Jazz Festival.

Amatorski geeft de aftrap op 12 juli. Deze jonge Belgische groep klinkt dromerig, ontroerend, minimalistisch, soms noisy en af en toe geven ze zelfs een dramatische toets. Hun mini-debuut ‘Same Stars We Shared’ met de single ‘Come Home’ legde de ruwe schetsen van Amatorski bloot en werd opgevolgd door ‘TBC’, met een uitgebreider en rijker kleurenpallet.

Zaterdag 14 juli wordt het podium eerst gevuld door STUFF., het jonge instrumentaal improvisatiecollectief van beloftevol drummer Lander Gyselinck. STUFF. staat voor muzikale referenties naar jazz, soul, funk, dub, hip-hop, jungle en elektronica. Ze vertrekken al improviserend vanuit samples en bestaande of nieuwe loops en spinnen zo hun songs uit tot avontuurlijke jams. De jonge groep bestaat uit Lander Gyselinck op drums, Joris Caluwaerts op keyboards, Dries Laheye op basgitaar, Andrew Claes op EWI en tenorsax en Mixmonster Menno, die zich enthousiast achter de draaitafels plaatst. In hun eigen woorden: “Fat beats, swirling improvisations, evil synth-screaming and ‘outer space’-grooves is what STUFF. will serve you!” – we zetten ons schrap!

Meer jong talent kan u ontdekken op Jong Jazztalent Gent. Op 5, 6 en 7 juli ziet u de geselecteerde deelnemers aan het werk. Op 8 juli wordt de winnaar bekend gemaakt en treed Ifa Y Xango, de winnaar van editie 2011 op. Deze concerten aan de ingang van het festivalterrein zijn gratis toegankelijk en starten om 16.30 op 5 en 7 juli en om 14.30u op 6 en 8 juli. De drie groepen in competitie voor editie 2012 zijn Hoax, Pure Elastic Quintet en The Unrevealed Society.

“Jazz en Fotografie” de fototentoonstelling in Flinxo Galerie, in samenwerking met en over Gent Jazz Festival, voegde Bruno Bollaert toe aan de expositie. Daarmee zijn alle negen fotografen bekend: Jos ‘The Jazzman’ Knaepen, Bruno Bollaert, Tom Van Nuffel, Wouter Rawoens, Maarten Marchau, Cees van de Ven, Christian Overdeput, Dominiek Dierick en Thomas Verfaille. De tentoonstelling vindt plaats van 22 juni tot 24 juli en toont prachtige foto’s die zowel de sfeer op als naast het podium weergeven en zo ook de ambiance van Gent Jazz Festival oproepen.

“Shirma Rouse Sings Aretha” is de titel van het nieuwe album van de Antilliaans-Nederlandse zangeres Shirma Rouse, die daarmee een ode brengt aan de Amerikaanse “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin.

De artistiek leider van het Metropole orkest drukte Shirma Rouse enige tijd geleden een dvd in de handen met daarop een live optreden van Aretha Franklin in Nederland uit 1968. Shirma was dermate onder de indruk, dat ze besloot meteen werk van te maken van een eerbetoon aan Franklin. Ter voorbereiding bestudeerde Shirma een jaar lang het repertoire van de Amerikaanse zangeres.

Aretha Franklin, geboren op 25 maart 1942 in Memphis -Tennessee, vierde onlangs haar 70ste verjaardag.  Shirma vertelt dat haar oma op St. Eustatius, waar Shirma werd geboren en ook opgroeide, altijd naar muziek van de “Queen of Soul” luisterde.  Daar al ontstond haar belangstelling en liefde voor Aretha Franklin. “Rock Steady”, “Until You Come Back To Me” en “Natural Woman” zijn enkele van Shirma’s favorieten die zij gedurende haar inmiddels 20 jaar durende carrière met regelmaat vertolkt.

Shirma benaderde haar band en een aantal van haar beste muziekvrienden, onder wie bespelers van strijk- en blaasinstrumenten, om deel te nemen in haar Aretha project. 

Shirma Rouse wil met dit project de grote diversiteit in het oeuvre van Aretha Franklin laten horen.  Tijdens haar zoektocht naar de ware Aretha Franklin herkent Shirma Rouse zichzelf vaak in Franklin’s manier van optreden en haar vertolking van de nummers. Rouse geeft ook aan dat haar zoektocht heeft uitgewezen dat Aretha Franklin iemand is die zich niet graag blootgeeft als mens en dat ze ook eigenlijk niet te weten is gekomen wat voor persoon Franklin in werkelijkheid is.

“Shirma Rouse Sings Aretha” is opgenomen in de Wedge View Studio Woerden en in Mokosound Studio Schiedam door producer/engineer Budy Mokoginta die ook de mix voor zijn rekening nam. Het album telt 13 hits van de Amerikaanse “Queen of Soul” uit de jaren ‘60 en ‘70 met arrangementen van de hand van o.a. Tom Trapp (viool & brass) en Shirma Rouse zelf. Een greep uit de tracklijst: “Think”, “Respect”, “Natural Woman”, “I Never Loved” en “Until You Come Back To Me”. Zonder uitzondering hits van wereldformaat, door Shirma Rouse met veel charme en grote trots gepresenteerd.
