HOWLIN' FOR HUBERT @ THE APOLLO THEATER NYC 24 FEBRUARY 2012

Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and More Celebrate Hubert Sumlin in New York

The “Howlin’ For Hubert’ concert took place at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York. Hubert Sumlin, known for his years backing blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, died on December 4th at the age of 80.

The entire show, which featured all-stars including Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Jimmie Vaughan, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II and Elvis Costello –  plus overlooked legends like Wolf’s former bandmates, harmonica player James Cotton, guitarist Jody Williams and saxophonist Eddie Shaw – was one for the history books. The event originated while Sumlin was still alive as a celebration to mark his 80th birthday. It stayed that way; Guest after guest recounted Sumlin’s unfaltering positivity and passion for his instrument. At one point, Toni Ann Mamary, Sumlin’s longtime manager and companion, tearfully recalled Sumlin tellling her, “I’m gonna be there. I don’t care if I play – I’m going to be there.” She added, “Can you feel him?”

The show was a benefit for the Jazz Foundation of America.

There were many highlights at Howlin for Hubert – a tribute to guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who played in Howlin’ Wolf’s band for decades and passed away on December 4th due to heart failure – but that was the peak. It was Richards’ first major musical appearance since the Rolling Stones last toured five years ago, and he showed little rust. After “Going Down Slow,”  he sat down and played metallic 12-string slide while singing “Little Red Rooster,” and then strapped on a Gibson electric guitar to sing and trade licks with Clapton on “Spoonful.” “It’s good to be back,” Richards said, peering up to the balcony before breaking into a cackle. “Goddamn, it’s good to be back.”

There were 2 sets:

Set 1
Key to the Highway – EC, acoustic, accompanied by James Cotton (an old Chicago blues harmonica player)
Eric Clapton leaves stage
Followed by musicians from Big Head Todd, David Johansen, Billy Gibbons, and Warren Haynes to some terrific old Chicago blues guys.

Set 2
Keb Mo, Doyle Bramhall II, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks & Susan Tdedski, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Gary Clark Jr. -highlights were Doyle Bramhall II, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland & Buddy Guy)
EC returns to the stage to accompany Gary Clark Jr.:
Shake for Me – (Gary Clark Jr./ Eric Clapton / Steve Jordan / Willie Weeks) vocals by Gary, great rhythm playing by Eric Clapton and Eric Clapton trading licks with Gary Clark Jr.(Eric enjoys Gary’s playing)
Little Baby – vocals by Eric Clapton (entire house band incl. Jim Keltner plus Gary)
Forty-Four – vocals by Eric Clapton (entire house band incl. Jim Keltner plus Gary)
Going Down Slow – vocals by Eric Clapton, highlight of EC playing, with some guest vocals by Keith Richards (probably unrehearsed and seemingly unanticipated by Eric Clapton)
Eric Clapton leaves stage for Keith Richards
Little Red Rooster – Keith Richards plays acoustic with James Cotton (a bit uneven, but best of Keith playing)
Eric Clapton returns to stage
Spoonful – Keith Richards and Eric Clapton plus James Cotton and band (one of the other highlights)

Encores – more than thirty musicians on stage:
Wang Dang Doodle
Smokestack Lightning

Music On Vinyl | WILLIE DIXON – I AM THE BLUES

image

I AM THE BLUES - MOVLP493 DIXON, WILLIE

Chicago Bluesman Willie Dixon was perhaps best known for his songwriting. He wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs and his songs have been recorded by some of the best-known blues musicians of his era, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, and Buddy Guy.

Later, his songs were popularized by groups, such as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Cream, and Led Zeppelin, whose “Whole Lotta Love” was loosely based don Dixon´s “You Need Love”. On this 1970 LP, the quintessential blues songwriter performs his own tunes - every one a classic: “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man”, “The Little Red Rooster”, ” Spoonful” and of course “Back Door Man” to name a few!

Long overdue, the album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, whereas Willie Dixon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Last.fm Presents: Imelda May

Imelda May and her guitarist, husband Darrel Higham, made their way to our new studio in NYC and stirred us all up playing songs from the latest album Mayhem. Growing up in Liberties section of Dublin, Ireland, Imelda benefited from having a large family in small living quarters (seven in two rooms), so one record player was shared by all. A balanced exposure of Jazz, R&B, Country, Blues, Rockabilly and traditional Irish music gave her a broad range of musical-styles that has helped shaped her musically and given her great direction in her career. It comes through big time on the new album with it’s mixture of styles. At an early age, her brother introduced her to artists like Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly and that helped open the doors to other musical genres she might have never heard.

Jack Bruce of Cream to launch supergroup Spectrum Road

New supergroup, featuring members of Living Colour and Santana, will celebrate work of jazz drummer Tony Williams

Jack Bruce of Cream has launched a new supergroup aimed at celebrating the work of deceased jazz drummer Tony Williams. Spectrum Road brings together the Scottish bassist and members of Living Colour, Santana and the trio Medeski Martin & Wood. Spectrum Road was originally formed under a different but self-explanatory name: the Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute. Bruce had spent much of the 70s as a member of Lifetime, Williams’s jazz-fusion ensemble, joining after Cream broke up. Williams died in 1997 and in the years following, Bruce discovered a fellow fan in guitarist Vernon Reid, from Living Colour. Joined by pianist John Medeski and drummer Cindy Blackman-Santana, Carlos’s wife, they have now recorded a debut album and booked a string of 2012 gigs.

KATIE MELUA - Secret Symphony

image

Secret Symphony, the brand new album by Katie Melua, will be released on March 5th, 2012.

Katie Melua takes the stage in front of the Secret Symphony Orchestra, on this, her fifth album. Always happy to step away from people’s expectations, Katie delivers a superbly crafted set of tracks interpreting songs drawn from a wide spectrum of songwriters including herself and Mike Batt.

“This album was going to be my ‘singer’s album’ says Katie. I had always wanted to do this one day; singing other people’s songs brings something out of you and your voice that isn’t perhaps where you would have gone vocally with your own material. It stretches you. As it happened Mike and I did write a couple of new ones, but the general idea was to find songs by great writers such as Ron Sexsmith (‘Gold In Them Hills’).”

The result is a collaboration with orchestrator and conductor Batt that imbues the songs with a distinct personality that could only be the work of this creative team. The gorgeous ‘Secret Symphony’ album was recorded at Air Studios in London and represents a blend of musicianship and dedication that will delight existing Katie Melua fans and win her many new ones.
