Op woensdag 21 november 2012 komen de Britse rocksterren van Status Quo naar Amsterdam voor een optreden in Heineken Music Hall. De kaartverkoop van dit concert start aanstaande vrijdag 1 juni om 10.00u.
De vijfkoppige band scoorde de eerste hitsingle in 1968. Hierna volgden de hits elkaar in hoog tempo op. ‘Rockin’ All Over The World’, ‘Down Down’, ‘What Ever You Want’ en ‘In The Army Now’, zijn enkele voorbeelden van de klassiekers die wereldwijd opgepakt werden. Met meer dan 60 hits en bijna 40 albums kan Status Quo meer dan terecht de meest succesvolle Britse rockband genoemd worden.
De karakteristieke band rond zanger/gitarist Francis Rossi en gitarist Rick Parfitt domineerde jarenlang de hitlijsten met hun strakke, ongecompliceerde boogie sound. Naast Rossi en Parfitt bestaat de huidige line-up uit toetsenist Andrew Bown, bassist John ‘Rhino’ Edwards en drummer Matt Letley. In 2011 kwam hun laatste studioalbum Quid Pro Quo uit die goed ontvangen werd door de media. Het album staat vol nieuwe sounds die doen denken aan vroegere tijden. Met het oog op de toekomst kan men Status Quo met hun energieke show in november in Amsterdam verwachten.

Op haar vijfde studioalbum Secret Symphony wil Katie Melua zich vooral vocaal laten gelden. “Songs schrijven wordt als professie meer gerespecteerd, zingen heeft een beetje het imago dat iedereen het kan”, zegt ze. “Dat is niet waar.”
Dat sommige nummers op Secret Symphony een bluesy ondertoon hebben, is gezien Melua’s inzinking niet eens zo gek. “Ik zing graag de blues”, vertelt ze. “De volksmuziek uit mijn geboorteland Georgië vertoont overeenkomsten met Amerikaanse blues en folk.”
“De toon is heel treurig. De pijn van het leven wordt in liedjes verwerkt en die liedjes kunnen de pijn transformeren. Ook de zangtechnieken komen overeen. Daarom zing ik de blues waarschijnlijk zo graag: ik heb het gevoel dat het in mijn bloed zit.”

earMUSIC, the Hamburg based rock label which is part of Edel Group, is proud to announce the release of “The Duke”, a tribute to jazz icon Duke Ellington. Though “The Duke” is a tribute album, it’s also very much a Joe Jackson album, consistent with his long-standing sense of musical adventure.
“I revere Duke Ellington, but I didn’t want this to be a reverent album,” Joe Jackson says of “The Duke”, his new tribute to American jazz giant Ellington.
True to Jackson’s word, “The Duke” is a decidedly unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his classic compositions while showcasing Jackson’s sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. Although it’s only the second time he’s recorded an album not comprised of his own compositions, “The Duke” is a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose longstanding affinity for Ellington’s pioneering spirit has served as a key inspiration throughout his own three-decades-plus career.
“The Duke” finds the iconoclastic English singer/composer/arranger/keyboardist and five-time Grammy nominee interpreting 15 Ellington classics over the course of ten tracks, interspersing melodic and rhythmic elements of various compositions in a manner that’s consistent with Ellington’s own freewheeling approach. Rather than emulating the songs’ original big-band settings, Jackson filters the material through his own musical imagination while exploring an assortment of unexpected grooves and textures. The resulting album is a seamless fusion of sounds and styles, whose abundant sense of playfulness is consistent with Ellington’s boundary-breaking attitude.
“Ellington didn’t consider his own arrangements to be sacred,” Jackson notes. “He constantly reworked them, sometimes quite radically. So I think my approach is in the spirit of the man himself.”
Jackson’s distinctive voice is featured on “I’m Beginning To See The Light”, “Mood Indigo”, and “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good)”, while “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” finds him trading vocals with punk icon Iggy Pop. R&B divaSharon Jones, meanwhile, shines with a soulful “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues”. In keeping with Ellington’s multiculuralism, Jackson also encouraged Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim to perform a soaring “Caravan” in Farsi, and Lilian Vieira, of the Brazilian/Dutch collective Zuco 103, to create a sunny, sexy Portuguese version of “Perdido”.
The album’s striking mix of electronic and organic textures is especially evident on instrumentals like “Isfahan”, “Rockin’ In Rhythm”, “The Mooche”, and “Black and Tan Fantasy”. The musicians include two contemporary jazz stars, violinist Regina Carterand bassist Christian McBride; rock guitar hero Steve Vai; drummer Ahmir ‘?uestlove’ Thompson and other members of The Roots; and two of Jackson’s old associates, guitarist Vinnie Zummo and percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos. The album was recorded and mixed by the legendary, 7 time Grammy winner Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Sting, Bob Dylan).
“When I started this”, Jackson says, “It felt a little daunting - like, how am I gonna pull this off? But it started to pick up momentum, and took on a life of its own. I got to work with people I never thought I’d be able to get, and they were all extremely enthusiastic and supportive of the project. It all came together in a way that surpassed my expectations. And it’s been a hell of a lot of fun.”

Willie Nelson announced that he’ll be dropping his highly anticipated ‘Heroes’ album May 15 with Legacy Recordings.
The record will feature a variety of talents from within and beyond the country genre — names like Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Billy Joe Shaver, Sheryl Crow, Jamey Johnson, Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson.
Showcasing a mix of new tunes as well as classics with a fresh Nelson spin, ‘Heroes’ will be Nelson’s first release with Legacy.
With Buddy Cannon at the producing helm, Nelson and gang recorded most of the upcoming project at the Austin, Texas Pedernales Recording Studio and some at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Recording Studios. Nelson just left his longtime label Columbia Record in February to join up with Legacy, which is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment.
“I’m really happy to be back home with Sony Music,” the 78-year-old, seven-time Grammy-winner said in a press release. “We have been partners for many years; all the way back to Pamper Music and Tree Music. We share a great history, and I’m looking forward to many more years together.”
On the new record, the opening track features Nelson and Haggard offering up a new take of Wayne Carson’s ‘A Horse Called Music,’ which was also the title track to Nelson’s 1989 album of the same name. On the recording of the track ‘Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,’ a new Nelson original co-written with Rich Alves, John Colgin, Buddy Cannon and Mike McQuerry where Snoop Dogg, Kristofferson and Johnson make their joint guest appearance. Sounds like a party, doesn’t it?
The other new songs slated for spaces on the record include ‘Hero,’ featuring Johnson and Shaver, and ‘Come On Back Jesus,’ featuring Lukas and Micah Nelson. The last song on the record is Nelson’s unconventional cover of the Coldplay song ‘The Scientist,’ which was featured in a short Chipotle film reiterating the company’s commitment to sustainable foods. Columbia Records is pleased to announce that Born and Raised, the next album from Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician John Mayer, will be released on May 22. The first single, “Shadow Days,” was released on March 6 and available on iTunes.
Mayer produced Born and Raised with Don Was, who’s worked on albums for acts such as the Rolling Stones, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. Rock legends David Crosby and Graham Nashprovide vocals on the album’s title song. Musicians joining Mayer on the album and on the road include highly-regarded keyboardist/pianist Chuck Leavell—who has worked with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and The Allman Brothers Band—as well as previous collaborators Sean Hurley on bass and Aaron Sterling on drums. Jim Keltner makes a special appearance on drums on “Something Like Olivia.” Rounding out the touring band are David Ryan Harris on guitar and vocals, Doug Pettibone on guitar and Michito Sanchez on percussion.
Columbia Records recently announced that Mayer will do an 18-date spring tour that kicks off April 9 in Bloomington, IN. Stops on the tour include Detroit, Providence, Buffalo, Memphis, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Phoenix. He will also be performing at South By Southwest in Austin on March 17, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 29.
Mayer’s previous albums—Room for Squares, Heavier Things, Continuum and Battle Studies—have sold more than 12 million copies combined. He has been honored with seven Grammy Awards and an additional 11 nominations. He has also been included in Time Magazine’s annual Time 100 list of the most influential contemporary thinkers, leaders, artists and entertainers, and twice been featured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine’s annual “Guitar” issue.

Ook Blood Red Shoes en Lacuna Coil naar Huntenpop
ULFT – Het Britse duo Blood Red Shoes en het Italiaanse Lacuna Coil zullen op 11 augustus hun opwachting maken op Huntenpop 2012. Het tweedaagse festival bevestigde eerder al de komst van o.a. Triggerfinger, Crystal Fighters, Racoon, Reel Big Fish en Alain Clark.
Met gepaste trost kan de organisatie melden dat het Britse Blood Red Shoes, naast hun show op Pinkpop,op zaterdag 11 augustus naar het DRU Park in Ulft komt. Naast de bekende duoformaties als The Black Keys en The Ting Tings, is ook Blood Red Shoes een duo dat een voorliefde heeft voor popliedjes met een rauwe behuizing. Op hun nieuwe plaat In Time To Voices is dat niet veel anders, al voegt de band daar regelmatig lekkere stevige rock en (disco)punk aan toe. Want hoewel Laura-Mary Carter (gitaar/zang) en Steve Ansell (drums/zang) er misschien schattig uitzien en maar met z’n tweeën zijn, live maken ze een enorme bak herrie.
Met Lacuna Coil haalt Huntenpop opnieuw een wereldtopper in het gothic-metalgenre binnen. Hoewel deze Italiaanse band, qua naam, wellicht iets onbekender in de oren klinkt, doet het zeker niet onder voor collegabands als Nightwish, Evanescence en uiteraard Within Temptation, dat vorig jaar nog het Huntenpopfestival opende. Dat bewijs levert het Italiaanse Lacuna Coil ook nu weer met het nieuwe album Dark Adrenaline, welke louter lovende recensies opleverde. Daarnaast heeft Huntenpop de band ook nog eens exclusief, als enige Nederlandse festival, naar Nederland weten te halen.
Eerder bevestigde het tweedaagse festival al de namen van Triggerfinger, Racoon, Crystal Fighters, Reel Big Fish, Shaking Godspeed, Alain Clark, Miss Montreal, Dope D.O.D., Muchachito Bombo Infierno, Bellowhead, Vintage Trouble, The Backcorner Boogie Band, Le Cirque Du Platzak en The Bruurkes.

Het gratis evenement start op Hemelvaartsdag om 13.00 uur met optredens van vooral buitenlandse muzikanten.
